Salzburg Sunset
Salzburg is famous for its Christmas markets, the most popular of which is located in the centre of Salzburg in front of the beautiful Salzburg Cathedral. Spread out in the cathedral’s square and only a stone’s throw from the famous Hohensalzburg Fortress, this market in the heart of the city is understandably popular and draws merrymakers from near and far looking to enjoy the warmth, sample the artisan food and browse the various wares. Recognising its position at the epicentre of Christmas activity in Salzburg, I wanted to take a picture that allowed me to capture the essence of the market and the magic of the city in which it takes place.
Heading away from the market itself, I found a position on the far side of Salzburg’s River Salzach that helped set the scene perfectly. In this capture, the market is overlooked by mountains and silhouetted trees and hugged by the city’s striking buildings half-shadowed in the final moments of sunset. Capturing all that makes Salzburg, Salzburg – from its mountainous surrounds to its architecturally-rich inner-city – this juxtaposition of elements really helps to create a sense of identity and place. Of course, at the centre are the brilliantly warm lights of the Christmas market itself – illuminating the facades of the nearby buildings and flooding its splintering streets. At the centre of the image and the centre of the city, it beckons with warmth under the darkness of winter skies.
