Hallstatt Church
During my trip to Salzburg, I took some time out of the city to visit Hallstatt. A picturesque town on the western shores of Lake Hallstatt, Hallstatt is particularly famous for its picture-perfect 16th Century Alpine houses and winding alleyways lined with shops and – more temptingly in winter – cafés serving hot drinks and aromatic glühwein. At the centre of the town is a beautiful church, with a striking spire that pierces the sky. A magnet for the eye and lens, it was a natural subject for me as I wandered around the town and explored its various viewing points.
I chose this particular position for my shot as it provided a generous view of the church, as well as the higgledy-piggledy rooves that jut this way and that throughout the town. Behind, the background is just as striking, with the snow-capped mountains overlooking the lake and the town. Fittingly, the bronze and copper hues of the church’s bricks colour-match the light streaking through the sky, while the moody blues of the clouds are in symmetry with the mountains and lake. With the drama of the mountain scenes behind very much in harmony with the winter season, the softer colours of the foreground make the town all the more inviting – encouraging you out of the winter cold.
