Machu Picchu Storm

from £100.00

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit the ancient site of Machu Picchu in Peru. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 15th century Incan citadel is renowned for its spiritual and historical importance, as well as its striking position on a greenery-clad mountain ridge. A remarkable sight to behold, it was a natural magnet for me as I explored the beautiful Cusco region.

Arriving before the crowds, I reached the grounds of Machu Picchu early one morning and spent time wandering the pathways between its ruined buildings, temples and fountains. The day was overcast, with thick clouds obscuring the sun, casting a moody atmosphere over the ancient site. I took the opportunity to take as many varied shots as possible, before finding this particular vantage point overlooking the central plaza below Huayna Picchu. Exuding drama, this particular scene struck me, drawing the eye towards a different angle of Machu Picchu instead of the broader, more well-known views.

Later, in post-production, I enhanced the drama and mood of the image by accentuating the contrast and depth of the clouds, as well as that of the intricate stonework and surrounding landscapes. The result, I hope, is an image that not only captures the physical beauty of the site, but also evokes the deep sense of history and mystique that permeates this incredible location.
