Weddell Seal Haul Out
While travelling around Antarctica I was able to experience its wildlife on land, sea and ice. Zodiac boats are used to navigate between icebergs, and often there would be seals hauled out on the ice. This image was taken from onboard a zodiac at Paradise Bay. Weddell seals are known for spending much of their time on ice in coastal areas. They have a distinguishable dappled coat and white under belly and will typically haul out and lie on their sides. Spotting this seal in a perfect textbook pose, I had to grab a shot. Their facial expressions often look so cheerful and it’s one of my favourite images from my trip. While the Weddell seal is undoubtedly the star of the shot, I was able to frame it sandwiched between with the majesty of the distant icebergs, and the crisp frosty ice on which it lay. It was a bright sunny day and you can see the ice crystals glittering in the sunshine as the seal cheerfully poses.
