Lemaire Channel Light
Lemaire Channel is an Antarctic strait off the Kyiv Peninsula. A unique part of the Antarctic Peninsula, it is a narrow channel (just 1,600 meters wide in parts) where steep mountains tightly hug an iceberg-filled passage of freezing waters. An epic sight, you feel extremely close to the landscapes around you as your small boat navigates the waterways and meanders past towering mountain and glistening ice cliffs. In essence, it’s mountain to sea, with no discernible pause between the land and water, making for breathtaking sights and dramatic photography.
During my trip to Antarctica, we passed through Lemaire Channel quite early in the morning, so I made sure I was up to avoid missing out. The low sun created some interesting light, sending striking rays diagonally across the scenery instead of straight from above. A key part of my photography, I’m always searching for where the light is and looking at how it interacts with its subjects. This particular mountain peak made for a beautiful sight, holding the light really nicely and portraying a sense of the drama and majesty of the landscapes in which it resides.
