Gentoo in Blue

from £30.00

I toured Antarctica during its summer season when the sun is nearly always in the sky. While this initially takes some adjustment, especially coming from a dark UK winter, you do notice shifts in the intensity of the light. This photograph was captured in the late evening when the light was lower and had a bluish hue.

A Gentoo penguin was resting on the snow and I laid down on the ground in order to shoot eye to eye. From this angle I had a dramatic background of the mountains and sky and sense of scale in contrast to the small penguin.

Keeping the background out of focus allows the penguin’s beak and white markings to really stand out. I love the warm flash of orange among the more muted landscape and it works in complement with the blue tones running through the icy snow.
