St. Mary's Church Beddgeleret
During my visit to Snowdonia in Wales, I stopped at the village of Beddgelert to photograph St Mary’s Church. This medieval site has a long and tumultuous history dating all the way back to the 7th century. The building has been ravaged by fire, survived Henry VIII’s dissolution of monasteries and undergone two restorations in the 19th century.
The shape and design of St Mary’s Church is very striking, with its broad triangular rooves echoing the surrounding peaks of Snowdonia. I chose a location on the banks of the River Colwyn showing the side of the church that has a trio of tall narrow windows and a clear view of the church bell outlined against the rising hills beyond.
There had been intermittent showers throughout the morning which allowed for interesting cloud movement and patches of light. A break in the clouds allowed a streak of sunlight to illuminate the hills behind St Mary’s while a slice of bold blue sky entered the frame. Not only does the light bring a new element to the shot, it adds scale and a sense of drama to the piece. Sitting between the banks of the river and the lush green woodland, the church is a focal point nestled among a multitude of natural elements in this beautiful Welsh valley.
Every detail of this breathtaking view in Snowdonia is printed in high definition, capturing with crisp, pin-sharp accuracy the intricacies of the landscape.
