St Michael's Mount Calm
This tranquil and calming image of St Michael’s Mount was taken just before sunrise on a particularly cold January morning. At this time of the year the sunrises and sunsets are more southerly, which perfectly suits the location of St Michael’s Mount on the south Cornwall coast.
I was keen to capture a sunrise that would emphasise the cool blue tones of winter. I set my tripod up at the top of the slipway that extends over to the island. It was still high tide with the water pooling around the steps. I used my neutral density filter to set up a long exposure, smoothing the texture of the water in the foreground. The resulting effect has a beautiful pale and icy quality to the sea and reveals the sand beneath the shallow, swirling waters.
By taking this photograph just before sunrise, it reduces the warm orange glow that is just beginning to tinge the drifting clouds, and maintains the neutral colour scheme I was seeking. St Michael’s Mount Calm is a soothing and peaceful image of one of Cornwall’s most iconic landmarks.
