Break of Dawn on Untersberg Summit

from £100.00

The northernmost part of the mighty Berchtesgaden Alps, the Untersberg massif is a wonderful work of nature. Straddling the border between Germany and Austria and nudging the Salzburg basin, this sprawling mountain range has found far-reaching fame for its beauty and was even used to film scenes in the 1965 Sound of Music movie. Naturally, the mountains here radiate a special kind of allure and are a beacon for everyone from climbers to photographers. That said, it was the peak of the Untersberg mountain summit that became my muse for the photograph; Break of Dawn at Untersberg Summit

The very last picture I took during my trip to Austria, Break of Dawn at Untersberg Summit was taken early on a clear morning, just as the sun began to crest over the horizon. With a cloudless sky allowing for a gorgeous golden glow, the warm sunshine slowly poured over the mountain face, beautifully contrasting the cool blues of the mountain and sky with the golden wash of the morning light. A rare moment of calm in the often-tempestuous conditions of the mountain range, this image captures a softer side to the face – all the while its jagged lines and the miniscule cross atop the summit serve to remind the viewer of the power, energy and scale of the mountain.
