Ashness Bridge Portrait
Taken in late afternoon on a bright autumn day, Ashness Bridge comprises the quintessential elements of the Lake District in one scene. I was keen to capture Ashness Bridge in its wider surroundings and so I climbed into the water upstream from the bridge, facing towards the distant hills of Skiddaw. Keeping my position level with the roadside, the stone-built bridge blends in with the rocky waters.
I set up a tripod as low to the water surface as possible and used a neutral density filter to smooth out the current rushing directly beneath the lens. The sun was cast directly onto the golden leaves of the treeline which were also uplit from the light bouncing off of the water, while the vibrant blue skies cast their hue onto the slopes of Skiddaw. The bright colours work in stark contrast with the close shaded water which gives the image a multitude of highlights and accents.
